The Art Of The Image

The title of today’s post is not to suggest that the photos I display here are all art. It is that nature via the Good Lord, is in fact art.

That of course, is primarily a matter of opinion.

Our job as photographers, is to discover art, and share it. Whether we will ever be artists or not, we need to be capable of “seeing” it, when we find it.

Our own artistry as photographers, comes in in how we compose what we see, including where the light is within the picture frame, and what direction it comes from, so that the light and shadows make an interesting combination. Also the contrasts of light and subjects need to be composed as best we can.

The same is true for creatures in the scene, and how they are composed with or against each other. Rhythm and flow can be important. Of course, those will go where they want to go, and pose how they pose.

We begin with one of my favorite subjects, the natural color of light.

Sunrise/sunset is a favorite time of day, for powerful; light.

The Colorado sunrise below, provides powerful color on the peak which juts out above the rest of the scene.

A powerful mountain in great light, and a great moment to share. Natural art.

The next scene you see, is a snow bank next to a pond, with some cracking in the snow. Part of that snow, is deep in shadow, but some is in full morning color. Note how the cracks or fissures provide contrast in the mage.

The next three sunrise/sunsets, are as natural as can be. It was just about paying service to what was right in front of me.

My favorite of today’s sunrise./sunsets is however, is the foggy prairie scene below.

God created it for us. I just composed the silhouetted trees and grasses by moving around and by my selection of lenses.

Beyond an actual sunrise/sunset, sometimes it is about the direction within the scene, of lines and how they travel through that scene. A bit of winter art.

The combination of fairly strong, bright light, with dark shadowy backgrounds, is not as hard to find deep in a forest as you might think. The addition of a little, not a lot, of contrast to keep the values separate, does certainly help.

The art is there, we just need to “see it”, and capture it and share it.

Wildlife presents us with as much art as any subject, sometimes more.

A simple pose with a wild animal such as this Canada Goose, and our ability to recognize its greatness, and make the capture successfully with a camera, brings to us, art. The pose in and of itself, is art.

A Pied-Billed Grebe, and some flawlessly perfect Duckweed, presented me with some “easy as pie” art.

As was normal. I created my images, said thank you to my subject, and moved on.

Sometimes wildlife such as this Brown Thrasher, present us with art, simply by what they look like, and how they pose. We just need to click the shutter.

Preening ducks, displaying unique and interesting swimming postures, and ducks swimming in colorfully reflective waters, make capturing and sharing natural art, very easy.

The Indigo Bunting below, proves that color and/or light contrasts, can be artful. It helps to have your primary subject posed, whether it be while making the image, or cropping at home, in a great position within the picture frame.

Sometimes, the wildlife subject we find, is just natural art, plain and simple.

Sometimes we find sort of odd scenes that fascinate us, and we just need to make the image.

I found the contrast (there’s that word again), between the soft (slow shutter speed) water, and the rugged tree limb to be visually stimulating.

We often each see something different when we look. That is why it is important, to really look.

Leaves up close, especially autumn leaves, present a different story to each of us. Art to some, not so much maybe for others. Make the picture and decide when you get home.

To me, dewy webs are amongst the most naturally artistic things in the natural world.

The size of the drops, the type and direction of the light, and on and on, decide if the image conveys art. I have spent hours with dewy webs. No wonder I had only a few friends.

The color and structure of nature, in and of itself, is art. The contrast of warm gold and cool blue is why there is art in this image. I believe this is in Utah.

Sometimes there are places such as The Maroon Bells ln Colorado, that are just God created art. Period. It is hard to miss at places such as this. I have seen snapshots of this place that were art.

Proverbs 16:19
Better it is to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoils with the proud.

God Bless,
Wayne
