Words

Words, as they are brought forth through human languages, are the number one method of human communication.  We can communicate by body posture and by gestures, but for better or worse, the use of words, be they spoken or written, are the mainstay of communication. They can be used to flatter and profess love, or to demean and show hate.

Often we write down words, much like I am doing now. Those writings are shared through personal or business letters, and they are certainly shared by using the internet and emails, and in blogs such as this one, and of course on social media.

They are used to provide solace, but often to provoke fear and even terror. They can be crafted to build people up, or to tear people down. To ask others for more closeness, or to insist others stay away. To let you know that you can be made physically well, or that your life & time here is limited.

One of the biggest jobs for words, is to provide a variety of types of information. To let us know about a community meeting, where there will be more words to chew over. To explain how 1+1=2.  To teach us history……well we have sort of burned those words at the stake haven’t we?

Words (lyrics) can be shaped and crafted to tell a rhythmic story while in the company of musical notes, or to provide iambic pentameter in the form of a poem.

They can be used to inform a nervous father to be, that he has a new child.  They also serve the purpose of a death notice.

Words can be succinct and carefully directed, or they can be cumbersome and clumsy.

So many things I could have done, but words got in the way.

Words are the companion for truth, but they are also the vessel for lies.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. I guess that is why people like me use so many words to describe a single photo?

Words are mean and nasty!!! Words are gentle. Words are ugly!!! Words are beautiful.

Mainly, words belong to the possessor.

We decided long ago in this nation, that we would not accept words in the form of physical threats, or those that were deemed vulgar by the majority of the culture. All else are the propriety of the speaker/writer. We also have the right to use words to criticize (not silence) the words of others, whether we like what they said or not.

Freedom of speech is a circle. It has no begging and it has no end.

Other than violence and vulgarity (and vulgarity is up for debate), your speech is yours, mine is mine, and we each have eminent domain over it.

Below you will find some words about what else, words.

“Words are pale shadows of forgotten names. As names have power, words have power. Words can light fires in the minds of men. Words can wring tears from the hardest hearts.”
― Patrick Rothfuss,

“I like good strong words that mean something…”
― Louisa May Alcott, Little Women

“Sweet words are like honey, a little may refresh, but too much gluts the stomach.”
― Anne Bradstreet

James 3:5 “In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire.”

Some lyrics (words) for Amazing Grace by John Newton

Amazing grace! how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch; like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

2 ’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed!

3 The Lord hath promised good to me,
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be
As long as life endures.

4 When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we first begun.

“Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Paul Simon

When you’re weary, feeling small,
When tears are in your eyes
I will dry them all
I’m on your side
Oh when times get rough
And friends just can’t be found

Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

When you’re down and out
When you’re on the street
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you
I’ll take your part
Oh when darkness comes
And pain is all around

Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

Sail on, silver girl
Sail on by
Your time has come to shine
All your dreams are on their way
See how they shine
Oh if you need a friend
I’m sailing right behind

Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind

Words can be both loving tools, and hateful weapons. Use with care,
Wayne
