The Forgotten Wildlife

Sometimes wildlife photographers forget, insects, spiders, slugs and so on, are very much wildlife. It can be good, and some times profitable, to occasionally get down on your hands and knees and “go macro” for your animal pictures.

I have known photographers who swear that insects and other little critters are not animals. Are they vegetable? Mineral? Gas? They breed and eat and kill. They fly or crawl or hop.

Of course there are those that feel that birds, fish, reptiles and such are also not animals. To them, only mammals are animals.

So in my world, we have below a few wildlife photos. Tiny wildlife for sure, but wildlife just the same.

Beetles can be beautiful. These two must know they are because they are clearly attracted to one another. I doubt they are capable of love, but apparently they can muster up some lust when that is needed.

Butterflies such as the Buckeye below, are one insect that most people like.

Dragonflies, are always great subjects.

Okay, is it a bee or a fly? Its common name is Bee Fly. It is in fact a fly that mimics a bee. To me, it appears to be copying a professional boxer.

There are an endless supply of “little critters” to photograph.

Of course, when you are in macro mode, and are out chasing bugs if you will, other things like orb webs and plants might be found to be carrying some morning dew, which is very photogenic.

Finally. When you are out telling and interpreting the story of nature, you may find some things that may not be pleasant.

The broken turtle shell you see below, was found by me while out looking for little critters. There is a story of some sort there as this turtle or what little is left of it, was likely hit by a car when it attempted to cross a road. Something found the dead critter and probably ate the body right out of the shell.

Telling the whole story of God’s Creation, was what I considered to be my job.

As the years have gone by, I write less and less about the technical aspects of photography. While I am not going to return to the days of making my posts primarily about Xs and Os, if any of you want more of that, I will occasionally include such. Just comment and ask.

Keep squeezing the trigger and firing away with those cameras, and I will see you again soon

God Bless,
Wayne
