Memories of the West

Okay, now I will try to send some images to this post.

There is something about today’s blog than has not been the case recently. The lead in subject is photography. Old photography, but photography. .

When you begin a westward journey here in America, there is no question that the first parts of South Dakota that you see, are in fact in the Midwest. Farm country. When you reach the final third off the state, you will see that you are in the real west, or as today’s title suggests the wild west.

The Bighorn Sheep below were photographed in Wind Cave N.P. They were so accepting of my friend and my presence, that we needed to remind ourselves to keep some distance. Ultimately wild animals are wild animals and those rams can do serious damage with their horns.

The Badlands of South Dakota are premier landscape territory. I have been there many times and I especially love working at the edges of light. Throw a storm into the equation and I am in Heaven.

At times, I was just as happy working with the light before sunrise or as is below, after sunset. The shape of the rock forms and the clouds, combined with that glorious color, make for a powerful albeit a bit scary combo.

Onward to Yellowstone N.P., Wyoming.

Pronghorn on the run. This male Pronghorn, sometimes referred to as Antelope, was on the move and all of my years of auto racing photography, helped me to pan my camera and stop the action so to speak, in this photo. The pan with manual focus here was even more touchy as he was running not only across the picture frame, but out and away from me at the same time. I considered challenges like this fun.

Of all he wildlife subjects I have had in my life, in certain respects, this was my favorite. Maybe not so in photos, but in behavior.

This Yellowstone bull Elk, is actually downtown in one of Yellowstone’s small villages. There are stores everywhere, paved streets and plenty of people. He is, the king of his domain.

Out of view in this image, there are about thirty cow elk. They are eating grass in an area in the middle of the two lanes of the street. At one point, he walked down to that grassy area, and looked each female in the eyes one at a time, and they laid down in that grass. Not very politically correct but God created these creatures with the best way to survive. That said, he had seen two young bulls entering the downtown area. He slowly walked straight at both of them, and in his last steps increased his speed and instead of stand and fight, with two to one odds in their favor, they both turned and ran out of town. They wanted no part of this guy.

Nobody was injured and life went on.

Of course, Yellowstone if filled with beautiful scenery.

This Bison herd is actually not in Yellowstone but near to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Those are the magnificent Grand Tetons in the background.

This is a simple, easy photo to make, but it says so much about this fascinating part of the world.

On another trip I was down New Mexico way, and I ran into one of my favorite critters, the Greater Roadrunner. Beep, beep! The next day I found another one a ways away, and that one posed nicely and this one did not, but come on. A Roadrunner should be on the move a little or at least strike some fun poses.

The mountain snow image below was made in the Colorado Rockies. What makes this special is that it was made in the late spring on a warm day..

Memories……..thanks for sharing some memories with me.

Knowing what is and what isn’t correct, can be a challenge. It always has been that way, but today it is more so. There is still help to be found from honest, caring people.

Often the best resourses are those who have walked the walk and know what they are saying.

He was ostracized and disowned by some in his own family. He persisted and with study and prayer, many of that family as well as friends have now followed his example.

John 14:6

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Ephesians 2:8-9
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

God Bless,
Wayne
