Story Telling….And For Art’s Sake

I view everything, and I mean everything in nature, as a potential photographic subject.  The first photo below is of a gull feather on a Lake Michigan beach right after the surf has receded.  Our other image is a pair of fallen Geranium petals which have come to rest on a bed of wild moss.  Sometimes nature photography is just “for art’s sake”

I am like all photographers in the sense that I enjoy sharing images that speak to the technical and artistic qualities of those pictures.  Having said that the stock photographer is still deep inside of me.  Anytime that I can create a technically proficient image that shows a great subject, I will share that image.

Nature photographers make a lot of pictures of butterflies but very few of their close cousins the moths.  One reason for that, is because many moths are nocturnal.  All nocturnal animals go somewhere during the day.  When you know where and when to find them, you will have your photos.  I drove into a Wisconsin state park shortly after sunrise.  My secondary purpose was to photograph Hummingbirds about an hour into the daylight.  My first purpose was to check the administration building around the night lights for interesting insects that had gathered during the night.   The exotic Luna Moth (top) and the colorful Tiger Moth were my first two finds.

There is nothing like an American Kestrel on a blue sky winter’s day.

This is he same 2005 (my first) Snowy Owl that I showed a few posts back.  You always remember your first.

My most photographed species of duck.  This Common Goldeneye is a male.

Female Mallard with her duckling.

In the past I have labeled this photo Arches N.P. with the La Salle Mts.  I do think The La Salle Mt.s with Arches N.P. is more fitting.

I have never shown these two pictures before.  I know what some of you are saying.  I’m sure I have seen them before.  I have shown so many pictures of Great-horned Owls (and owlets) at this nesting site, that it even becomes hard for me to be sure.

As an animal lover it is difficult to watch wildlife being killed, or eaten or just dead.  It is however the essence of stock photography to tell the stories of nature with your pictures.  That includes the relationship of predator and prey.

Visitation to this blog was the third highest of all time yesterday.  I have no idea why but I thank each and every one of you.
