With my Seasonal Citizen Blog I visually pushed the seasons ahead well into autumn. As long as we are living in an altered reality I thought I would be the first to celebrate winter. More specifically a perfect winter storm of a few years ago. All images were made in southeastern Wisconsin.
Pretty much the same rules (and lack of) apply to winter landscape photography as any season. Special attention to exposure is a good idea. Make sure to open up your exposure if your reading was biased by the snow itself. That nasty old metering idea in photography that everything is mid-toned will make sure that your snow is gray unless you compensate. I like mixing complex compositions with others that just show tree and sky, or maybe just tree. Even the complex comps will work best if they “look” simple. As is usual for me I use a lot of different focal lengths starting at 18mm and sometimes running to 500mm. The absolute best scenario is an all night storm with clearing in the morning. These images were all made in WI but I lived for the “morning after” the storm when I was living in Colorado. Please dress appropriately. Even if the morning seems pleasant you will get wet and cold. I have sunk almost out of sight in snow banks that first appeared shallow.
